Finding Good Wine When You Dine
As the Culinary Capital of the Caribbean, there is almost no end to the dining options available to guests and residents alike. When enjoying the delicious cuisine at local restaurants, it is just as important to have the right beverage with your meal. For those who enjoy wine as part of a dining experience, Wine Spectator magazine helps out by providing a list of restaurants who have exceptional wine lists that offer interesting selections, are appropriate to their cuisine and appeal to a wide range of wine lovers.
Every year, restaurants can submit their wine lists for consideration for the Wine Spectator Awards, which are cleverly given out as a logo that features one, two or three wine glasses. To qualify for an award, the list must present complete, accurate wine information. It must include vintages and appellations for all selections, including wines available by the glass. Complete producer names and correct spellings are mandatory, while the overall presentation and appearance of the list is also taken into consideration. After meeting these basic requirements, lists are judged for one of the three awards.
In 2012, 12 CITA member restaurants were recognized with either the Award of Excellence (one wine glass) or Best of Award of Excellence (two wine glasses).
Award of Excellence
2,842 winners
The basic award, for lists that offer a well-chosen selection of quality producers, along with a thematic match to the menu in both price and style. Typically, these lists offer at least 100 selections.
Best of Award of Excellence
878 winners
The second-tier award, created to give special recognition to restaurants that clearly exceed the requirements of the Award of Excellence. These lists typically offer 400 or more selections, along with superior presentation, and display either vintage depth, with several vertical offerings of top wines, or excellent breadth across several wine regions.
Grand Award
75 winners
The highest award, given to restaurants that show an uncompromising, passionate devotion to the quality of their wine program. These restaurants typically offer 1,500 selections or more, and feature serious breadth of top producers, outstanding depth in mature vintages, a selection of large-format bottles, excellent harmony with the menu and superior organization, presentation and wine service.
There are a total of 3,795 restaurants worldwide that have been awarded Award of Excellence, Best of Award of Excellence or Grand Award for 2012. The full list can be found in the August 31st issue of Wine Spectator.
