Cayman Islands Seafood Choices

Cayman Islands Seafood Choices

While the ocean is vast and covers more than 70% of the earth’s surface, it has its limits. We hope that visitors to Cayman want to help us with caring for our greatest resource—the beautiful Caribbean waters and the marine life found within. One of the easiest ways to help be a steward of our oceans is to choose sustainable seafood items when dining out. Sadly, many of the traditional (and delicious) fish options such as grouper and snapper have been severely overfished. As a result, their populations are under tremendous pressure, and we as consumers can help protect these species from further depletion by choosing fish from sustainable stocks. Locally, Cayman Sea Sense, a project run by the National Trust, is leading the charge about making better choices.

The Cayman Sea Sense project is a sustainable seafood education program dedicated to helping restaurants and their customers make informed and environmentally positive seafood choices. The project assists local chefs and restaurant owners reduce the number of non-sustainable seafood items on their menus. By choosing items that are on the ‘green’ or ‘yellow’ lists of the Sea Sense card, you are helping to make a choice that will help our ocean. In a restaurant, you can also look for the Sea Sense logo next to sustainable choices on the menu!
