Dive 365: Wreck of the Kissimmee

Location: West End, Cayman Brac; GPS: N19 41.754 / W79 52.811

Approx depth: 45-65ft – wreck

The Kissimmee is a retired tugboat that was purpose sunk in 1982, in a large sand area just off Scott Dock, making it a popular and easy shore dive. It is a small wreck compared to the M/V Keith Tibbetts; the Kissimmee is only 36ft (12m) long, and lies nearly upside down. The surrounding reef is healthy, and lots of rays and schooling fish can be found on and around the wreck. Shore divers should be wary as the barge uses Scott Dock weekly for supplies, so if the barge is offshore, the dive should be postponed for another day!

Artificial reefs have been used for thousands of years to help with military strategy (blockading ports or rivers), increase fish yields for fishing, or even kelp farming. Wrecks, among other forms of man-made structures, are a popular and interesting option as they can help increase the fish yields in an overfished area, provide an attractive topographical feature in an otherwise empty area and ultimately provide the base for a complex ecosystem that benefits not only the nearby reef, but fisheries and recreational tourism.
